In 2006 I was working hard to develop a retro 1970’s/80’s comic art style for a project that eventually evolved into Saga of a Doomed Universe. I’ve kept that style ever since, mainly because I have such a reverence for that era of comics and it honestly just feels like a natural way to draw. Here’s a couple of warm-up sketches, likely referencing comic book great Sal Buscema.
Creating Comics Livestream Thursday June 13 at 10:30am (EST)
This week’s livestream will be from my twitch channel. You can either watch the livestream here on Patreon or click the link and go directly to twitch. This week I’ll be assembling the finished rough layouts of Saga of a Doomed Universe II, issue 2 in adobe indesign, as well as lettering the book. See you then!

Prelim Roughs for Saga of a Doomed Universe II
In case you missed the livestream yesterday, here’s the prelim roughs I completed during that session. The livestream recording is posted here also, just scroll down for that. I’m planning to finish the last few pages today, so by next Thursdays livestream, I’ll likely be working on lettering and beginning stages of penciling the first page in full. Hope to see you there!

From the archive: Machine Man & Saga of a Doomed Universe sketches
Here’s a couple of never-before-seen sketches from 2006, Machine Man and his cast of characters from the 1970’s comic and preliminary roughs from Saga of a Doomed Universe. I’ll likely include the SOADU sketch as back matter for a planned trade paperback edition, but you’re seeing it here first.

High Strangeness Page 10
Digitally restoring this graphic novel is like stepping into a Time Machine to 1998. As I’m faithfully following my own brush strokes from when I was 28 years old, I’m reconnecting with my younger self a bit and recalling what was going in my life during that time. This is definitely not something I expected when I decided to undertake this project, and to be honest it wasn’t exactly the best of times for me, either professionally or personally. Maybe I’ll get into that in a later post, but for now I’m still very stoked to see this book restored to high res. Here’s the next page completed earlier this week, minus the lettering (which is why there are several blank spots in the art).
