It’s finally here, my finished inks and colors of Jack Kirby’s penciled Conan drawing. In addition to the high res, I’ve also added my color study, which is a rough color sketch that I always prepare before coloring the actual piece. As you can see, I initially planned to make the lizard creature red, but then changed my mind about that at some point in the process.
Creating Comics Livestream Thursday, May 30 at 10:30am (EST)
I finished the Kirby Conan inks and colors this week, so I’ll be sharing that in the livestream plus working on layouts on the sequel to Saga of a Doomed Universe. See you there!
New Art Listings on eBay: Batman, Wolverine & More!
Over the past few weeks, I’ve opened my archives and started the process of selling off a lot of my old original comic art. This weeks batch includes:
1. Gabriel Gecko Iron Man page that I inked, as a portfolio sample sometime in 1994.
2. Wolverine Christmas card that I created, also in 1994.
3. Marinna from Alpha Flight character sketch.
4. Batman pen and ink drawing from 1993
5. An unpublished Star Trek:DS9 page penciled by Brandon McKinney and partially inked by me. This was part of an unfinished pitch package to Marvel when they briefly held the Star Trek license.
You can purchase these and more art listed at: https://www.ebay.com/usr/beyond-forward-art
The Two Kings! Jack Kirby & Conan
I finished inking this gigantic 13″ x 19″ Conan illustration by Jack ‘King’ Kirby this morning. I plan to color this thing next week, so look for that here. In the meantime, I’ve uploaded a pic of the original art sitting on my drafting board, along with a high res of the inks. I talk a bit about this on this week’s live-stream, which you can replay from the previous post.
It goes without saying that I’m a huge fan of Jack Kirby’s work and always enjoy inking his pencils whenever I have the chance. I had actually started inking this digitally (see older post) but decided it deserved the traditional tools instead. I’m very glad I did. Although digitally inking is a more efficient method, for my money nothing can beat the traditional tools of a Windsor-newton brush slinging on a sheet of 2-ply Bristol board paper.
I’ve also added two new collections to my Patreon page, ‘Works-in-Progress’ and ‘Finished Art’. These should help keep all the new art postings more organized and easier to access.
